Water wise Regeneration Strategy for the Rainfed Agrosilvopastoral systems

Aware of the drought tendencies expected for the southwest region of Portugal, Quinta do Vale da Lama and ORLA Design came together to create a Waterwise Dryland Regeneration Strategy for the upper landscape units of the farm. Specific patterned strategies were created for each unit. Some aiming for the regeneration of a native woodland ecosystem, by increasing the canopy tree layer with local native species while allowing the existing shrub layer to regenerate. Other units were designed to recreate an agrosilvopastoral system, reinventing the traditional Mixed Rainfed Orchard (“pomar misto de sequeiro”), adding fodder banks of leafy material to use as feed for the summer months. The sheep will be grazing the pasture areas, below the main productive tree crops overstory of carobs and almonds, following a holistic grazing plan, staying only a few days in each paddock, allowing for the pasture to regenerate while incorporating organic matter into the soil, improving its fertility in the process. A thorough hydrological plan was designed and implemented to capture and store the rainwater in the soil, through the creation of swales on contour, minimizing erosion and maximizing vegetation growth where the water is more abundant.
